Red Hat Government News is a monthly newsletter designed to provide government agencies worldwide with the latest information on training, offers, events, and news articles.
It's been an exciting Spring at Red Hat and the next few weeks promise to be just as busy. We are excited to announce Red Hat's JBoss Enterprise Application Platform has been accepted for Common Criteria evaluation. Common Criteria is an internationally approved set of security standards used by governments and businesses worldwide. Read below for the full announcement.
The Federal Open Source Alliance's webinar featuring GSA CIO Casey Coleman was a huge success and Joab Jackson from Government Computer News wrote a nice summary of the discussion and the GSA's use of open source. As always, be sure to check the government events calendar for more information on other upcoming webinars and events including an April 29th webinar on "Improving Patient Care with Open Source Technology".
Respectfully,
Paul Smith, VP of Government Sales Operations

The world's leading provider of open source solutions, Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), and Atsec information security are pleased to announce that JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, v4.3 is currently 'In Evaluation' for Common Criteria evaluation at Evaluation Assurance Leval (EAL)2+ (augmented for flaw remediation).
Common Criteria is an internationally approved set of security standards used by governments and businesses worldwide. It is designed to bolster end-user confidence by providing clear and reliable assurance that a technology's integrity and security architecture have been thoroughly tested and validated by an accredited, third-party source against the Common Criteria Standard for Information Technology Security Evaluation (ISO/IEC 15408).
Recognized and adopted by 22 countries, Common Criteria certification allows security-conscious organizations such as the U.S. government to purchase IT products with the confidence that they are in compliance with widely accepted security standards. In addition to its significance in government, Common Criteria is gaining momentum in financial services, healthcare and other industries that benefit from the security assurance certification affords.

Casey Coleman, the chief information officer of the General Services Administration, spoke at a Federal Open Source Alliance Web seminar held earlier today.
Coleman noted that the GSA does indeed use a wide variety of open source programs. The agency started using open source for information systems, though is increasingly using the software for transactional mission-critical systems. For instance, the agency is using the JBoss application server for many of its acquisitions systems, and Linux for its data centers.
(In addition to those workhorses, Coleman also mentioned that GSA is using a number of other programs, some of which surprised us: Bugzilla, for bug tracking, JUnit testing software, the JMeter Apache performance monitoring tool, and Eclipse, which can be used for application development and as a run-time engine.)
